A Man’s Mental Health and Recovery Story: NAMI Racine County

For years, I believed that success meant hiding my struggles. As a black man living with anxiety and depression, admitting I needed help felt like admitting failure. But my story isn’t about defeat—it’s about finding strength in vulnerability, joy in recovery, and a life filled with family, faith, and fulfillment.

The pressure to ‘man up’

Like many men, I grew up internalizing the idea that emotions were a sign of weakness. “Man up” was the unspoken mantra. I carried this belief into adulthood, where the pressure to perform professionally and personally became overwhelming.

Anxiety began to creep in, feeding a constant cycle of worry and self-doubt. Depression followed, casting a dark shadow over the brightest moments of my life.

For a long time, I tried to power through. I was succeeding on the outside—building a career in youth development, community organizing, and even achieving a dream of winning an NBA Championship in 2021 by working with the Milwaukee Bucks, but inside, I was struggling to hold on.

Chasing fulfillment and facing a breaking point

Even after reaching professional milestones and what many would call “success”, I still felt unfulfilled. I couldn’t shake the anxiety-driven thoughts and emotions that consumed me daily.

I felt trapped, constantly chasing fulfillment but never finding it. It wasn’t until I reached a breaking point that I realized I couldn’t keep going like this. The weight of pretending to be fine was unbearable, and I knew something had to change.

Seeking help was intimidating, but it was also the moment I chose authenticity over exhaustion—and it became the turning point in my life.

The power of support and seeking help

With the support of therapy, family, friends, and organizations like NAMI Racine County, I began to embrace the idea that mental health is as essential as physical health. My recovery wasn’t instant, but step by step, I am still learning to manage my anxiety and depression.

Today, I can proudly say I am living a fulfilled life—not because my mental health challenges disappeared, but because I’ve learned to live with them. I am a father to two beautiful daughters, engaged to an incredible partner, and blessed with opportunities to serve others as a pastor, an advocacy coordinator for NAMI Racine County, and an inspirational speaker about mental health.

To anyone reading this who feels overwhelmed by anxiety, depression, or any other mental health illness: YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Your story isn’t over, and help is available.

Recovery doesn’t mean the absence of struggle—it means finding the tools, support, and community to move forward, one day at a time.
