Southcoast Health opens specialized outpatient Procedural Recovery Unit at Charlton Memorial Hospital

FALL RIVER – Southcoast Health recently announced that a new Procedural Recovery Unit has opened at Charlton Memorial Hospital.

The specialized outpatient unit has nine beds to support patients while they prepare for and recover from cardiovascular, electrophysiology and interventional radiology procedures. It is meant to streamline care and boost patients’ experience. Through creating a dedicated space for patients expected to be discharged the same day, the unit helps ensure that they receive proper care.

“We are proud to provide this important resource for our patients and community,” said David McCready, CEO and president of Southcoast Health. “This specialized approach to care exemplifies our commitment to clinical excellence. I would also like to congratulate the entire team who made this achievement possible.”

The unit is staffed by a team of cardiovascular-trained registered nurses who specialize in caring for cardiovascular and interventional radiology patients. Their experience includes cardiac monitoring and critical care with Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certifications.

“With a team approach, the highly trained staff and providers in the PRU have years of experience in these specific services,” said Robbie Geide, director of intervention cardiology at Southcoast Health. “This unit focuses on the unique needs of each patient, with the goal to help them recover at home after their procedure where they are often the most comfortable.”

The space is located next to the surgical center and is open Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

“This growth is another example of the Southcoast Health Heart & Vascular Center’s commitment to consistently putting the needs of our patients first,” said Dr. Peter Cohn, chief of the Heart & Vascular Center. “We always focus on improving the patient experience and providing continued top-notch care. I am delighted with how this unit improves our cross-functional communication within the hospital, making it easier for our cardiac providers to work together. It is essential that we are able to provide this level of specialized care right here in Fall River.”
